A summer heatwave is due to hit this weekend which means many are looking forward to fun plans in the sunshine with loved ones. However, for those hoping to catch up on their shut-eye it might not be the best weekend for it. Express.co.uk has compiled a list of 21 things to help you sleep soundly even on the most sweltering of summer nights.

How to keep cool at night during the summer

Sweltering nights are a horrible reality for many in the warm weather, but with a few simple tricks you can cut out the tossing and turning and immediately get some rest.

Block out the light

One of the best tips to keep your bedroom cool is to block out the sun during the day.

Blocking the light while keeping windows open to allow air to travel in and out is an important step to helping to aerate the room while preventing the sun from baking the room.

Airing out rooms

It is tempting to open every window when the weather is warm, but in factual fact, you should try to create a flow of air throughout your home to help circulate the air.

If your windows are south-facing, it is best to close your curtains or blinds or put the window in the night vent position to allow some air in.

But, if your windows are north-facing, it’s advised to keep them shut to avoid any hot air coming in.

If you have an attic, you should try to open the hatch as hot air rises so it will help dispel the hot air to areas of your home which you frequent less.

Cool your sheets

Ideally in the summer, you should use a summer duvet or simply a cotton sheet if a duvet is too hot.

You can also add an extra element of coldness to your sleep by placing a pillowcase or your sheet into your fridge before you go to sleep.

Take these sheets out right before you head to bed and you will feel the cooling effect as you try to sleep.

If refrigerating it does not make it cool enough, you can pop them in the freezer, inside an air-tight bag to avoid them getting wet.

Putting a hot water bottle into your freezer and sleeping with that will also have a similar effect.

Buy a fan

An electric fan is one of the easiest ways to help keep you cool at night.

In very hot conditions, you can add a shallow bowl of iced water in front of the fan as this will help to cool the air.

You can also create the same effect by adding a wet flannel or small, damp towel over your fan.

Other tips:

  • Try sleeping in another room – some rooms, especially those on lower floors will likely be cooler.
  • Switch off your lights – light bulbs emit heat and therefore can warm a room.
  • Have a cool shower before bedtime to drop your core temperature.
  • Buy houseplants for your home – they help to cool down their surrounding environment.
  • Activate the cold pressure points on your body (such as on your wrists and neck) by putting a cool town or ice cubes in a plastic bag on them.
  • Use cooling and calming essential oils.
  • Drink plenty of cold water during the evening and keep a glass close your bed.
  • Avoid alcohol as it has a dehydrating effect.
  • Wet your hair and head with cool water as this will help to cool down your body temperature.
  • Wear refrigerated socks to bed.
  • Unplug your electronic items in your bedroom and make sure they are not left on all day as this will warm rooms.
  • Hang a wet sheet in front of an open window as this will cool the breeze blowing inside.
  • Avoid using your oven as it will heat up your home.
  • Choose lightweight cotton sheets to promote ventilation and airflow.
  • If you have long hair – tie it up to ensure your neck is not covered as this will warm you up.
  • Eat lighter meals with plenty of salad, fruit and vegetables as this will lead to less ‘meat sweats” as you metabolise your food.
  • Stretch out in bed to reduce your body heat and enable air to circulate.
