2021 has been recorded as the year of the Great Resignation, a movement that saw a record number of people quitting and switching jobs. While some have been forced to do this due to the pandemic, others have chosen careers better suited to their lifestyle, more accommodating to their mental and physical health or, most importantly, paying better.
Jammed between record high inflation and bottoming-out interest rates, consumers are generally not in the best financial position.
As global economies start to feel the impact and cost of COVID-19, the bigger picture is unlikely to change in the near future.
However, a large majority of people have taken control of what they can change: moving to a better paying job.
Express.co.uk has compiled a list of the five high paying, in-demand jobs currently available.
Python developer – £55,000
Python is a programming language that is generally used to build websites and software or automate tasks.
Python developers code, design, deploy and debug projects on the back-end, or server-side, doing tasks that regular customers will never notice unless it is done wrong.
The role can span across a range of duties and in the modern age almost every company requires a developer to either get them online or maintain their online presence and operating.
Cyber security specialist – £60,000
Cyber security is becoming increasingly important as cybercriminals and fraudsters continue to grow more sophisticated and realistic in their scams.
Cyber security specialists can work across a range of fields and having enough experience can garner a salary in excess of £70,000.
Some companies run apprenticeships in cyber security wherein school leavers can immediately start getting hands on experience or study a degree alongside it.
HR director – £97,572
The majority of medium to large businesses require an HR department regardless of the sector or industry they work in.
The HR director oversees every aspect of the department and is generally responsible for the company’s personnel, training strategy, policy-making, onboard of personnel and running the department.
HR departments often directly affect the running of a company and how it handles its staff or colleagues, with experienced HR directors in London earning over £100,000 per year.
General counsel – £130,000
General counsels are essentially in-house legal teams in the corporate world, operating as essential advisors to board members along with some other added duties.
General counsel guides businesses through potential legal turmoil, ensuring compliance, managing risk and providing advice to help meet objectives whilst operating within the law.
Not all businesses involve and operate with general counsels but those that do often provide high-end salaries to match.
Firefighter – £42,000
Despite the name, firefighters deal with a variety of emergencies and situations that don’t always involve fire such as floods, crashes, spillages of dangerous substances and rescue efforts.
Trainee firefighters start off on an average salary of £28,000 with the only requirements being they have to be over the age of 18, pass a fitness test, medical check, enhanced background checks and have a full driving licence.
