What are the dangers of gift cards?
There are many dangers to buying loved ones a gift card, not least if it has an expiry date – which could see those receiving it miss out on picking up the V-Bucks.
Meanwhile, if Fortnite or Epic Games were to collapse, then you face losing your V-Bucks gift card and being unable to get a refund – especially if it is a non-refundable gift card.
As well as this, gift cards are prime targets for scammers and fraudsters, and gift card fraud can leave merchants vulnerable to damaging chargebacks from the credit cards that were originally used to purchase them.
And because online shopping has increased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it seems card fraud is only getting worse.
Are there any V-Bucks gift card scams to watch out for?
Gift card scams are common so it's understandable to be concerned.
Historically the most common type of gift card scams involve an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from the gift card company.
But given that cards and in-game digital purchases, such as battles packs, are now easier to access online, gamers are reminded to take caution.
In 2018, police warned that Fortnite scammers were preying on gamers with phoney V-Bucks offers.
"Do you or your kids play Fortnite? Beware of fraudsters offering free V-Bucks," said police forces, including Cheshire Police and Cambridgeshire Police.
"They will seek access to your account and create charges or may ask for your phone number and sign you up to premium rate subscriptions.
"Be careful with your personal data."
