Official figures have revealed that 16.6 million households in England 86 percent of those eligible have received the £150 rebate. The Government announced Britons would start receiving their rebates from April and the deadline for when local authorities need to pay it is September 30. People will receive the payment even if they pay less than £150 council tax, receive a single person discount, or do not pay because they receive council tax support.

However, the payment will not be made for empty or second homes, or to non-resident landlords.

The majority of households have already had the rebate after the discount was applied automatically to those paying direct debit.

Those who do not use direct debit to pay their council tax will need to register with their council to receive it.

Councils are taking different approaches to issue the payment and have their own rules on how residents can claim.

Some households will need to share their bank details with their council through an online form on their local authority’s website to claim the money.

Others are being sent vouchers which can be redeemed at a Post Office branch.

Britons who received the voucher must cash it in by Friday, September 30 to receive the £150 payment. 

Local authorities have also been told to make arrangements for those who can’t access the internet and people can contact their council by phone if help is needed. 

If people have not applied for the rebate before the due date, some councils state that they will be credited the money into their council tax account and will see the £150 come off their bill rather then receiving cash. 

Those living in pricier properties in council tax bands E to H will not be eligible for the £150 rebate.

However, the Government put aside a separate £144million which was to be handed out at the discretion of the council.

The Government stated that this money would be prioritised for vulnerable people, those on low incomes, and those claiming certain Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits.

There is no timeline for when discretionary fund payments should start but the guidance that has been given to councils stated that they will need to spend the money by November 30, 2022 or return it to Central Government.

How much each council received for their discretionary fund depended on multiple factors.

Smaller areas, such as the Isles of Scilly received around £17,550 whilst areas like the City of London received a bigger sum of around £33,300.

The largest allocation was in Birmingham with £3.6million, and Tower Hamlets got the second largest pot at £2.8million.

There were 10 local councils which received more than £2million, the majority of which were based in London.

There were around 23 councils which received between £1million and £2million and some of these were Durham, Bradford, Cornwall and Manchester.

Britons can check their council’s budget on GOV.UK.

If people consider that they may be eligible for a discretionary council tax energy rebate payment then they should contact their local council.
