Paul Imerson travelled down to London on Sunday for the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

The Newcastle United fan decided to drive from Durham with his son Josh, 18, after struggling to find trains.

But when they arrived, they discovered match day parking was an absolute "daylight robbery".

He said: "You know London prices [are higher] but that's just taking the biscuit. I couldn't believe it.

"The car park was full. I was expecting it to be about £20.

"When we go to Newcastle it costs about £4 to park the car.

"I was more worried about the £135 if you lose your ticket too.

"Imagine you pay £100 and come out of football and you've lost your parking ticket."

Paul claimed he immediately reversed and drove to Stanmore at the end of the tube line – which then took them an hour to get to the ground.

After travelling more than 250 miles, the teacher said the situation was "terrible".

He added: "We drove down on Sunday and you can imagine how grumpy I was after that drive.

"Once we drove down there, I jumped on Google to check where others had parked.

"Imagine you're an hour before kick-off and you've got nowhere else to park, it's terrible really."

Wembley Park said the reason prices are high is because the parking is attached to a four star hotel.

They also advised anyone getting to the ground by car to pre-book their parking in advance.

A Wembley Park spokesperson said: "Wembley Stadium is a public transport destination.

"For those that must use a car, both the Wembley Stadium and Wembley Park websites make it clear that it is strongly advised to pre-book parking for event days.

"When pre-booked, parking charges are £35-40 or under.

"The car park in question is linked to a 4* hotel.

"As such, prices for parking, as quoted on the day of an event, will higher than usual."

Paul shared a photo of the price list on Facebook.

Flooded with comments, one user said: "That car park is on a better wage than me."
