A cleaning expert has the perfect laundry trick for those with old pillows that may need throwing away. She has devised a cheap and effective method for getting your pillows sparkling white again.
Babs is a household blogger who describes herself as “the internet mom you didn’t know you needed” and shows useful household tips for two million followers on her Instagram account BrunchWithBabs.
Recently, Babs posted a video of a useful laundry trick that will make your pillows last longer, making her idea both affordable and eco-friendly. She said: “Experts say you’re supposed to replace your pillows every 12 months. That would cost a fortune, I’m going to strip my pillows instead.”
Babs first began her video by turning on the taps of her bathtub, and said: “First, fill your tub up with the hottest water possible.” After that, she said: “Next, add a quarter cup of baking soda, and a quarter cup of borax.”

She then showed a jug filled with dark blue liquid, and said: “Next in is two cups of liquid laundry detergent, and then stir.”
After the ingredients are mixed in, Babs then gave her old pillow a “pillow bath” and said: “just place it in the water and submerge it with a wooden spoon.”
Babs then soaked the pillow in the bathtub for 24 hours and made sure to flip it every once in a while during the soak to make sure all the build-up and grime had gotten out of the pillow. She then showed the water of the bathtub and said: “After 24 hours, check out this disgusting water. Oh my goodness.”

The water appeared to be a greyish-yellow colour. Babs said: “What you are seeing here are body oils, excess detergent, fabric softener. Everything your washing machine can’t get out.”
The cleaning expert then got the pillow out of the bathtub but made sure to squeeze out the extra water in the pillow and then immediately put it in the washing machine. Barbs said: “Now into the washing machine on the normal cycle, no detergent.”
After the pillows had been washed, Babs put them in the dryer but had a useful tip for making sure the pillows came out fluffy. She said: “Don’t use dryer sheets after stripping. Throw in dryer balls or tennis balls to fluff those pillows up.”
When the dryer cycle was complete, Babs pulled out a pillow to show it looking sparkling white and brand new.
Babs recommends her pillow trick but advises people to check their labels as some pillows may not work. She ended her video by saying that memory foam and down pillows “might not be recommended” with this laundry hack.
However, Bab’s laundry advice has gotten a lot of traction online with nearly 150,000 likes on Instagram and many comments on the video have thanked the cleaning expert for her idea.
One person said: “I tried this and it worked great” while another commentator said: “I did this and it worked an absolute treat.” Many people could not believe the colour of the bathtub water and all the excess that came off some bedroom pillows, as one person said: “That really is disgusting! Yowza!”
Another person said: “Thank you, internet mum! You always have the best cleaning videos” and another appreciative user wrote: “I had no idea this was possible, thank you, Babs!”
Somebody else wrote: “Babs, you’re such a joy and I always love trying out your tips. Your family are so lucky to have you” and another commentator said: “Babs is the best thing to happen to Instagram!”
