‘Magic’ household staple to whiten, soften and remove clothing stains

From using white vinegar to brighten and remove stains to using ice cubes to remove wrinkles, there are lots of laundry hacks that can help homes save time and money. To help you avoid wasting time on fake laundry hacks, experts at Fresh and Clean Laundry have shared some of the “best laundry hacks that actually work and will help you save time” in laundry routines.

Use white vinegar

The experts said: “White vinegar is an amazing ingredient when it comes to laundry. It can be used to whiten whites, remove stains, deodorise sportswear, and even soften the fabric.

There are four ways households can use vinegar on it’s own to “perform laundry magic”

The first being to whitens whites. Vinegar is a “powerful whitening agent” and can be used to remove yellowing on whites.

The mild acetic acid in vinegar also acts as a whitener and brightener for grey, dingy clothes.

To make this happen, simply add one cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle along with regular detergent.

White vinegar can also be used to remove stubborn stains on clothes. To use, simply soak the stained fabric in a mixture of one part vinegar and two parts water, then let it sit for 30 minutes.

To deodorise with white vinegar, Add half a cup of vinegar to the wash cycle along with your regular detergent, and see the result.

For those who don’t like the idea of using heavily scented fabric softeners but want softer clothes, distilled white vinegar acts as a natural fabric softener and leaves no residue on laundry.

For this, simply add half cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. For a light scent, add a couple of drops of an essential oil like lavender to the bottle of vinegar.

Use baking soda

Baking soda is another great ingredient to have in laundry kits. It can be used to deodorise clothes, remove stains, and soften the fabric.

When households buy that replacement box of baking soda for the fridge, get an extra one for the laundry room.

Baking soda can boost the performance of laundry products and even replace a few. To use, simply add half a cup of baking soda to the wash cycle along with the regular detergent.

Bicarbonate of soda will work on a multitude of “stubborn stains”, from simple juice spots to the most stubborn of stains.

When bicarbonate of soda mixes with water it forms a froth, this bubbling action is actually why this ingredient can really infiltrate fabrics and lift stains from clothes.

To use it, simply mix one part baking soda and two parts water to make a paste, then apply the paste to the stain. Let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.

Baking soda can also be used to soften the fabric. To use, simply add half a cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle.

Ice to remove wrinkles

Wrinkles can be a real pain to remove, but there’s an “easy hack” that can be used to help smooth out clothes.

Simply grab a few ice cubes and place them in the dryer along with the wrinkled clothing.

The laundry pros explained: “The ice will help to relax the fabric and remove the wrinkles. The key to this hack is timing.

“You want to add the ice cubes to the dryer while the clothes are still slightly damp. This will help the fabric relax, and the wrinkles will disappear.”
