‘Effective’ cheap methods to keep mosquitoes out of the home

TikTok users share how to make mosquito trap

Christopher Nye, overseas living expert at YourOverseasHome.com, said: “We’ve spent many years helping countless clients find their dream home and move abroad, and in this time we’ve heard a fair few theories on the best methods to avoid mosquito bites, or how to get rid of them altogether.

“So, we’ve compiled a list of the best natural ways to deal with them, meaning you won’t have to rely on expensive products and harsh chemicals like DEET.”

1. Citronella

Citronella is a common natural and “effective” essential oil which is derived from the leaves and stems of cymbopogon.

While most humans don’t mind the light citrus scent, mosquitoes “hate it”, so citronella is used in a variety of products such as sprays and candles.

2. Tea tree

The expert explained: “Tea tree oil is known for its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

“Studies also suggest that tea tree oil may be an effective insect repellent, as its intense aroma keeps bugs like mosquitoes at bay.

“Its powerful medicinal properties also mean that, if you do end up being bitten, it can help to heal mosquito bites fast.”

Britons should be careful when using essential oils around pets, especially in their natural form as most of them are toxic.

3. Lavender

Lavender plants or in its oil form is one of the most “effective” mosquito repellents, according to the expert.

It has analgesic, antifungal, and antiseptic qualities, which means that in addition to preventing mosquito bites, it can calm and soothe the skin.

If opting for essential oils, it can also help to calm residents, especially when placed in a diffuser.

4. Lemon eucalyptus oil

Christopher continued: “Used since the 1940s, lemon eucalyptus oil is one of the more well-known natural repellents.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in America have even approved it as an effective ingredient in mosquito repellent.

“You can create your own mixture using one part lemon eucalyptus oil to 10 parts sunflower oil or witch hazel.”

5. Cinnamon oil

Although a little more rare, cinnamon oil can be used to make the home smell nice as well as be an environmentally friendly pesticide.

According to the pro, it even has the ability to kill mosquito larvae. It can also act as a repellent against adult mosquitoes, which provides a “win-win” situation.
