Blood is a protein stain which means it’s tough to clean. It’s also more tricky to remove because the blood oxidises when it leaves the body.
The proteins in the blood bind together when they’re heated which means they set particularly fast on laundry.
Many people will notice blood stains change from bright red to dark brown on clothing; this is the process of oxidation.
There are many methods for removing blood stains but one of the critical tips homeowners need to remember is the temperature of the water.
When exposed to hot temperatures, the protein in the blood will vibrate until it breaks the bonds that hold it together.

At this point, the protein will clump together making it almost impossible to wash out. This is why cold water should always be used.
Shadmaan Kader, an expert at Pound a Metre has shared his tips for removing blood stains from clothes and other laundry items.
As well as using cold water, he advised using another household staple – salt.
He exclusively told Express.co.uk: “Rinse the stained area with cold water to prevent the blood from setting.

“Create a solution by mixing two tablespoons of salt with four cups of cold water.
“Soak the stained garment in this solution for 30 minutes, then rinse and wash as usual.”
The reason why salt is used to remove blood stains is because it contains dehydrating properties that lift both the water and the blood.
Salt can be found in most homes but can also be bought from local supermarkets and online.
